Data Submission

To ensure the legacy of IPY, we seek to identify and track the location of all data collected explicitly as part of one of the IPY endorsed projects. The IPY Data Committee requires three initial steps:

  1. Identify an archive: Each project should contact and identify an archive and data management point of contact and provide a brief description of the data to be collected. We can provide assistance in identifying an appropriate archive, if necessary.
  2. Register your metadata: The IPY Data Committee requires that all data collected as part of IPY are described with a minimal set of metadata in accordance with the IPY metadata profile. These metadata must be openly shared through internationally recognized metadata catalogs. Some countries are creating their own metadata registries, but if you are unclear where to register your metadata, the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD) has created a custom, IPY version of their metadata submission tool, the GCMD docBuilder. If you have already have generated standard formatted metadata, we can arrange an automated transfer using standard XML-based protocols. If you need assistance with any of this, please contact .
  3. Publish your data: The IPY Data Policy (PDF) requires full, non-discriminatory, and timely release of IPY data. Many projects may serve their data directly through their own web sites. This is an effective solution for rapid data delivery to targeted audiences, but projects should still develop a plan to migrate well-described data to established archives for long-term preservation and access. Data access mechanisms should be described in the metadata.
